Course Outline: Writing True Stories 1       

Introduction

Welcome to Writing True Stories Part 1 - this is the course for writers who are beginning the journey of writing memoir and non-fiction - you have begun a journey both challenging and rewarding. You will need to acquire a copy of Writing True Stories Allen & Unwin 2017. It normally costs $34.95 Australian dollars. (You may be able to find it for less on an internet bookshop.) You will receive individual commentary on your work, both notes on your pages and a written report.

The Course Fee of $620 is payable in advance and is non-refundable once you have begun the course. It covers all on-page notes and individual guidance for ten units of writing of up to 3,000 words each. If there is significantly more words in the unit, it may be considered as one and a half units (4,500 words) or two units (6,000 words) and so on. Guidelines for following the course:

  • Overall time for completing the course is up to two years. You may complete the course in a few months if you wish.
  • It is a good idea to give yourself a regular time and space to do this online or correspondence course, as it is easy for other demands to take over.
  • Time limit for each exercise is advised in the edition of the text you are using, but for the purposes of the correspondence course, disregard the advice. You may write up to 3,000 words per unit. Do not be concerned with how long it might take.
  • Clearly identify the unit you are doing on the front page, e.g. Unit 1, and number the pages.
  • Use double-spacing if printing out your exercises to allow room for hand-written comments by tutor.
  • Return your exercises one at a time. Wait for the return of each exercise before you send the next one.
  • You may email or post your units.
  • If you post, include a stamped self-addressed envelope with each exercise unit.
  • For each exercise unit you complete, you will receive on-page notes and a separate written report with detailed, individual guidance.
